» Precautions for the use of structural pallet racking

As an important storage device in warehousing and logistics, structural pallet racking can effectively improve space utilization and operating efficiency. However, improper use may cause safety hazards or equipment damage. To ensure safety and extend the life of the storage rack, the following matters need to be noted:

✅ Storage rack installation and inspection

1. Professional installation

The structural pallet racking should be assembled by professionals according to the design drawings to ensure that the structure is stable and the horizontal and vertical degrees meet the standards to avoid tilting or deformation due to improper installation.

2. Clear load-bearing markings

The maximum load capacity (static load/dynamic load) must be marked on each storage rack, and overloading is strictly prohibited. Overload use will cause the beam to bend, the column to deform, or even collapse.

3. Regular structural inspection

Check whether the bolts and buckles are loose every week, and whether the columns have collision dents or rust.

Carry out a comprehensive inspection every six months, focusing on welding points, beam connections, and foot fixation.

✅ Cargo placement specifications

1. Evenly distribute weight

The goods must be evenly placed on the pallet to avoid a center of gravity shift. Excessive weight on one side may cause the pallet to overturn or uneven force on the structural pallet racking.

2. Matching pallets with storage racks

The size of the pallet should be slightly smaller than the storage rack layer to ensure that there is no overhang on all four sides (usually 5-10cm gap is reserved on both sides).

Use pallets that meet the standards (such as wooden, steel, or plastic pallets), and damaged and cracked pallets should be replaced in time.

3. Stacking height limit

The stacking of goods shall not exceed the design height of the structural pallet racking, and the top and the upper beam shall be kept at least 10cm safe distance to prevent collision during loading and unloading.

✅ Daily operation safety

1. Standard use of forklifts

When operating, the forklift must be aligned with the rack channel and slowly raised and lowered to avoid hitting the beams or columns.

Operate after the fork tines are fully inserted into the pallet. It is forbidden to push and pull the structural pallet racking to adjust the position with a forklift.

2. Climbing and trampling are prohibited

The storage rack is not designed to be a bearer structure. It is strictly forbidden to climb or stand on the pallet rack beams and layers to pick up and place goods. Climbing equipment should be used.

3. Smooth passages

The width of the main passage must meet the forklift turning radius (generally ≥3 meters), the secondary passage should be kept ≥1 meter, and goods are prohibited from being stacked at the emergency exit.

✅ Environment and maintenance requirements

1. Ground load-bearing and flatness

The warehouse floor must have sufficient load-bearing capacity (usually ≥3 tons/㎡), and regularly checked whether the floor is subsiding or cracking.

2. Anti-collision protection

Install anti-collision barriers or buffer strips in front of the storage rack columns to reduce the risk of forklift accidental collision.

Set up warning signs at the turning points, and ensure sufficient lighting for night operations.

3. Special environmental treatment

Rust-proof coated storage racks should be used in humid environments, and chemical warehouses should avoid storage racks from contacting corrosive substances.

✅ Emergency management

1. Establish an accident plan

Develop emergency plans for rack collapse, cargo sliding, etc., organize drills regularly, and clarify evacuation routes and first aid measures.

2. Timely handling of hidden dangers

When the storage rack is deformed, the beam is bent, or the foundation sinks, stop using it immediately and contact a professional repair.

Summary

The safe use of structural pallet racking requires a combination of standardized operations, regular maintenance, and employee training. Managers should establish inspection records, strengthen safety awareness, eliminate risks from the source, and ensure efficient and stable operation of the storage system.
